What is Essential Tremor?
Essential tremor is neurological conditions that causes rhythmic shaking, most commonly in the hands, but sometimes in the head, voice, or legs. It is the most common movement disorder, and while often mistaken for Parkinson’s, it is a distinct condition.
Causes & Triggers
- Typically hereditary (familial tremor)
- Worsens with movement, stress, caffeine
- Not related to Parkinson’s or brain degeneration
Treatment Options
- Non-surgical :
- Medications like propranolol and primidone
- Botox injections in specific cases
- Physical therapy and assistive devices
- Surgical:
- Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for moderate to severe tremors unresponsive to medication
- MR Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)
