Post-operative Remote Support

The part of medical travel that most often goes missing. Your care does not end when you board the flight home.

What remote support means here

Remote support is a scheduled programme of follow-up consultations with the team that treated you, continuing after you return home. It is booked before you leave Istanbul, not offered vaguely as “stay in touch”.

This is the point at which international treatment most often falls down. The operation goes well, the patient flies home, and three months later a question about a wound, a setting or a medication dose has nobody obvious to go to. Fixing that is not complicated — it just has to be arranged in advance and written down.

The follow-up schedule

Between scheduled reviews your coordinator remains the single point of contact — the same person who met you at the airport, not a general enquiries address.

When What is reviewed
1 week after return Wound healing (photo assessment), pain, medication, any immediate concerns
1 month Symptom control, stimulation settings, medication reduction progress
3 months Functional progress, rehabilitation programme, refinement of settings
6 months Longer-term outcome, medication review, planning for the year ahead

Working with your doctor at home

Routine post-operative blood work and local wound care are best done where you live. We provide your physician with the operative report, device details and settings, the medication plan and the follow-up schedule, so that they are not asked to manage a patient whose treatment they cannot see.

Where you do not have a neurologist familiar with DBS locally, tell us — that changes how closely we schedule reviews.

If something goes wrong

Complications and unexpected symptoms are assessed remotely first, quickly. Many issues — a suboptimal stimulation setting, a medication interaction, a wound that looks alarming but is healing normally — are resolved without travel.

Where a revision procedure is medically necessary, your return to Istanbul is organised under the terms of the medical warranty and protection policies included in your treatment package. Ask for those terms in writing before you travel; we would say the same about any provider.

Conditions treated

Parkinson’s Disease

A progressive condition of movement — but one where the right treatment, chosen at the right stage, can return years of independence.

Tremors

Not every tremor is Parkinson’s, and not every tremor needs surgery. Naming the tremor correctly is the first and most useful thing we do.

Dystonia

Muscles that contract when they are not asked to — pulling the neck, the hand or the whole body into postures the person cannot undo.

Frequently asked questions

Is remote follow-up included, or charged separately?

The scheduled programme is part of your treatment package. The specific terms are set out in writing before you travel.

Can my DBS device be reprogrammed remotely?

It depends on the device. Some systems support remote programming; others require an in-person session. Which system you receive, and what that means for future adjustments, is part of the pre-operative discussion — ask about it.

What if I need my battery replaced years later?

Battery replacement is a short procedure and can often be done locally if a centre near you is familiar with the device. We provide the documentation needed. If you prefer to return to Istanbul, we arrange it.

Not sure where to start?

Send us your reports and a short note. A coordinator replies within one working day — no cost, no obligation.
